Victor Harbor — known to the Ngarrindjeri and Ramindjeri people as Wirramulla — is one of South Australia’s favourite coastal getaways, and it punches well above its weight for things to see and do.
From iconic wildlife encounters and heritage experiences to stunning beaches, markets and seasonal whale watching, there’s genuinely something for everyone no matter when you visit.

Wildlife & Nature
Granite Island & the Kaiki Walk
Just a 5-minute walk from the motel, Granite Island — known to the Ngarrindjeri people as Nulcoowarra or Kaiki — is Victor Harbor’s most iconic attraction.
Walk or ride the famous horse-drawn tram across the causeway to this stunning island, characterised by huge granite boulders, crashing waves and panoramic coastal views.
The 2.9km Kaiki Walking Trail loops around the island and is perfect for families. Keep an eye out for little penguins returning to shore at dusk, dolphins in the bay, and Southern Right Whales between May and October.
Whale Watching (May to October)
Victor Harbor is one of Australia’s premier whale watching destinations. Each year from May to October, Southern Right Whales migrate to the sheltered waters of Encounter Bay, known to the Ramindjeri people as Ramong, to calve and rest. You can spot them from The Bluff, the Granite Island Causeway, or join a boat tour for a closer look.
The SA Whale Centre also posts daily sighting updates — well worth following before you head out.
The Bluff (Rosetta Head)
Standing 97 metres above sea level just 4km southwest of town, The Bluff — known to the Ramindjeri people as Kongkengguwar, is one of Victor Harbor’s most dramatic natural landmarks.
A short 600-metre loop walk from the car park takes you to the summit for 360-degree coastal views stretching from Granite Island to the rugged southern coastline. In whale season, it’s one of the best vantage points around.
It’s also the starting point of the famous Heysen Trail.
Urimbirra Wildlife Park
Just 5 minutes north of Victor Harbor in Hindmarsh Valley, Urimbirra is a 40-acre open-range wildlife park and a genuine highlight for families. Hand-feed kangaroos, pat a koala, watch a snake handler, and explore the wetland bird sanctuary.
With over 400 native animals and daily shows, it’s easy to spend half a day here. Open every day including public holidays.
Waitpinga Beach & Parsons Beach
A short drive from Victor Harbor, Waitpinga Beach and Parsons Beach are wild, rugged and breathtakingly beautiful.
These surf beaches sit within Newland Head Conservation Park and are popular with photographers and experienced surfers.
The scenery is spectacular — just be aware these beaches have strong rips and are not safe for swimming.
Worth the drive purely for the views.
Heritage & History
Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tram
One of Victor Harbor’s most iconic experiences, and one the kids absolutely love.
Australia’s only remaining horse-drawn tramway has been running since 1894, with magnificent Clydesdale horses pulling double-decker trams across the 630-metre causeway to Granite Island.
Runs every day except Christmas Day (weather permitting). You can also book a behind-the-scenes stable visit to meet the Clydesdales up close.
South Australian Whale Centre
Located in the heritage Railway Goods Shed on Railway Terrace, the SA Whale Centre is an interactive museum celebrating Victor Harbor’s rich marine heritage.
Explore life-size whale exhibits, a 3D theatrette, the Kidz Zone, fossil dig and more.
Perfect for families and fascinating for all ages as well as being the best place to check for current whale sighting reports during season.
